Poetry

Of all of my creative pursuits, I think I am fondest of poetry. I like playing with language, and I like the way things sound. I like rhythm and I like rhyme. I don't much like most classical poetry, though there are few gems that I may take the time to mention here in the future.

As I've said on other pages, please don't steal from me in whole or in part. If you would like to reproduce my work elsewhere, that is fine, but please credit "mptgraves" and "mptgravesite.com" when you do! If you have any thoughts on my work, feel free to email mptgraves@mptgravesite.com. Thanks!

Many more poems to come, but I've put on several more. Please let me know if there is a better way to index these, I haven't really thought much about optimizing it, but perhaps I need some sort of menu.

Presence

This is a poem I wrote immediately after the event described therein took place. My nephew, at the time an infant, woke crying late one night. I went to comfort him and experienced something truly singular. This poem still gives me uncomfortable chills.

Escutar

This is an old poem that has a rhthym that I have always enjoyed. It also has a certain aged feeling that I find appealing.

Reverie
This is one of my favorite poems, never failing to inspire me to continue creating. As this is very important to me, I am glad that I was able to produce something that in turn pushes me to produce.
The Tale of the Misogamic Knight
The title is somewhat self-explanatory, so I'll spare you the summary.
Short Works
I find that I often write just a few lines and feel that I am done with the thought, or that I fancy a phrase that I've written but don't feel that it fits with the whole. This page contains a collection of very short poems and the like that don't really warrant individual pages of their own.

Shambhala

This poem echoes the sentiment of one of the haiku in the Short Works section.

Bubble

Ironically, words have failed me for ten minutes in attempting to introduce this poem. I likes it. A whole lot. For lots of reasons.

Drive

This is a poem about the struggle of trying to achieve the balance between consumption and production of art.

Intrapersonality

This one's a little bitter, but it still makes me laugh.

Dreamer

This is another much older poem of which I am quite fond. The character typifies a certain flavor of nostalgia to me.

<untitled1>

A poem of the nature of the speaker as he relates to nature.
In teh Beginning
This is a religious piece, which might be a turnoff to some of you, but thankfully the internet, at least, still allows freedom of speech, and if you don't like it, don't read it. This is probably one of my only religious poems, and was originally turned in as an assignment in college, where I was doing biblical studies at the time. Those of you with some new testament knowledge will see a theme strongly influenced by the opening verses of John. And before I get emails about it, no, the title is not a typo, if you read the piece, maybe you'll get it.
